Statement on Iran’s Intention to Designate UANI a Terrorist Organization

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today regarding the Islamic Republic of Iran’s announcement that it intends to designate UANI as a terrorist organization:

“The Islamic Republic’s intention to designate UANI as a terror group is a blatant attempt at intimidation that will not stop our efforts against this outlaw regime.

“Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, and UANI has worked tirelessly for years to stop businesses around the world from engaging with this rogue state. We will not be deterred from our efforts to stop Iran on its path of nuclear proliferation, terrorism and human rights abuses.”

Iran’s announcement was made the day before UANI’s annual Iran Summit, where U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered remarks about the United States’ continuing efforts to enforce a campaign of maximum pressure on the regime in Tehran.

For 35 years, Iran has been designated as a state sponsor of terror. In addition to carrying out direct attacks, Tehran has committed terrorism by proxy through Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and militias in Iraq, Syria, and Bahrain. Iran has a long history of terrorist attacks against the U.S. and other Western countries, carrying out bombings, abductions, and hijackings.

Since its founding in 2008, UANI has initiated multiple international campaigns to alert businesses around the world about the legal, political, financial, and reputational risks associated with doing business in Iran
