U.S.-Sanctioned Javad Oji Confirmed As Iran’s Next Oil Minister
(New York, N.Y.) — Today, Iran’s parliament confirmed regime loyalist Javad Oji as the country’s next oil minister. It is a critical position given that Iranian crude and natural gas exports historically account for one-quarter of government revenues. With his confirmation, Oji joins Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi as a member of the new administration designated by the U.S. Treasury Department, or wanted by Interpol.
This is Oji’s second time serving the regime in a high-level ministerial capacity. He previously served as deputy oil minister during the presidency of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and more recently served as the head of the Sina Energy Development Co. (SEDCO), a subsidiary of multi-billion dollar conglomerate Mostazafan Foundation that answers only to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Oji faces perhaps the greatest challenge an Islamic Republic oil minister has ever faced. His predecessor, Bijan Namdar Zangeneh, had sought to attract foreign investment that would inject hundreds of billions of dollars into the industry suffering from aging infrastructure, a goal he was unable to achieve, not the least because of U.S.-led sanctions re-imposed in 2018 that targeted the Iranian oil sector.
Though Iran’s crude oil exports have suffered immensely due to the oil embargo, Tehran has partnered with the Chinese Community Party and others to sell oil and petrochemicals in violation of U.S.-sanctions. Exports amounted to an estimated 840,000 barrels per day in July 2021. The development of Iran’s oil industry and increased crude oil exports are dependent on nuclear negotiations with the U.S., and whether the Islamic Republic can persuade major companies that its industry is a safe investment.
