UANI Welcomes Enhanced U.S.-Israel Cooperation
Polling Shows United Approach Favored By Majorities Of Democrats, Republicans, & Independents
(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman released the following statement today amid recent and upcoming meetings between U.S. and Israeli officials concerning the dangers posed by the Iranian regime. In May, UANI commissioned a national survey of 500 opinion leaders that showed broad bipartisan support for the U.S. to work in concert with its Arab and Israeli allies to deal with the Iranian threat.
“UANI welcomes the enhanced level of engagement between the Biden Administration and the newly elected Israeli government. Israel and America’s Arab allies are under direct threat from the Iranian regime’s nuclear program, its support for terrorist proxies, and its efforts to destabilize the region—but they do not have a seat at the negotiating table.
“Iran policy must be conducted in close consultation with U.S. regional allies most threatened by Iran’s malign behavior. Their security concerns cannot be ignored if collective security is to remain a foundation of the international community—and the American people agree.”
UANI’s national survey, conducted by GS Strategy Group between May 5 to May 14, showed wide bipartisan support for a cooperative approach, with 59 percent of all respondents agreeing that the “U.S. should approach Iran in concert with its Arab and Israeli allies.” This included 54 percent of Democrats, 60 percent of Republicans, and 69 percent of independents. Self-described liberal Democrats supported this position by a margin of 28 points.

Americans want the Biden Administration to engage with Congressional Democrats and Republicans, too, as has been done with previous successful nuclear arms control agreements, rather than going it alone. The same national survey also found that 59 percent of those surveyed believe “the Biden Administration should wait to negotiate with Iran until after consulting with and winning support from both Democrats and Republicans in Congress.” 53 percent of liberal Democrats agreed, as did 51 percent of Democrats overall, along with 58 percent of independents and 75 percent of Republicans.

“To prevent a nuclear arms race in the world’s most incendiary region, Arab states and Israel must have their security interests protected. To ensure that any agreement made with Iran remains durable no matter which party controls the White House, the Biden Administration should engage with skeptics and opponents of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) to find consensus on a strong agreement that actually ends the totality of the Iranian threat,” said Lieberman.
