UANI Statement on Iranian Terror Activity in Europe

New York, NY – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) President David Ibsen today issued the following statement regarding a new report about Iranian terror activity in Europe:

“Apparently, finding a way to keep alive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action isn’t the only thing Iranian diplomats are working on while in European capitals. UANI’s research shows that for decades, Iran has used a blend of hard and soft power to spread its revolution, including in Europe, where there is an active pro-Iranian regime network of mosques, cultural centers, universities, and seminaries with links to Tehran.  These institutions help spread Iran's Islamist ideology and promote Iran's foreign policy objectives in Europe, and also provide cover for the Iranian-backed terrorist movement Hezbollah’s ongoing activities on the continent.

"Europe recently witnessed firsthand that Iran's quest to export its Islamic Revolution in Europe includes the dangerous practice of putting would-be bombers and assassins under diplomatic cover. Iran should have suffered severe consequences for one of its diplomats being implicated in a plot to bomb civilians outside Paris, but the moment passed without reprisal. Instead, European leaders are reportedly working to pin recent plots on European soil against so-called ultranationalist factions. This is a farce. It is the work of a calculating regime based in Tehran intent on exporting its revolution. Our allies in Europe would be wise to follow the hardline approach the U.S. is taking to Iran, as demonstrated by today’s re-imposition of sanctions, to better protect its people. The U.S. should also push the EU to finally remedy its failure to fully designate Hezbollah a terrorist organization.”

UANI recently released a new resource about Iran’s use of soft and hard power to spread its brand of Islamic fundamentalist ideology throughout the Middle East and beyond.
