UANI Statement On Iran Violating U.N. Security Council Restrictions
(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement following Iran’s provision of drone technology to the Russian Federation, in clear violation of restrictions set forth in U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231, which was implemented as part of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
“Iran continues to demonstrate that it is not a responsible or trustworthy part of the international community, but a pariah that has made common cause with terrorists, dictators, and despots. In provisioning Russian forces with its drone technology, Iran is aiding in the commission of war crimes against Ukraine and its civilian population, thumbing its nose at the U.N. Security Council, and endangering international peace and security. If ever there were a time to recognize the folly of attempting to revive the JCPOA, it is now.
"Thanks to the JCPOA’s arbitrary sunset clauses, the Iranian regime and its partners in Moscow already benefit from the October 2020 expiration of the international arms embargo. Tehran’s capacity to buy and sell arms and transfer them to terror organizations will be supercharged if the restrictions that prohibit it from transferring drone and missile technology are allowed to similarly expire in less than one year. The same can be said about its nuclear program, with most of its constraints lapsing after 2031, under the JCPOA’s terms.
“It is critical that the U.S. and its European allies hold Iran accountable for its violations, impose tremendous costs, and work toward reconstituting a complete international arms embargo against the Islamic Republic with performance-based criteria established for its expiration, and a permanent and verifiable shutdown of its nuclear program. This can only be achieved by invoking the snapback sanctions mechanism under Resolution 2231.”
