UANI Resources: Iran & Syria Ruled Liable For Americans Wounded Or Killed By Terror Proxies

(New York, N.Y.) – Last week, a U.S. District Court Judge ruled that Iran and Syria are liable for damages in attacks perpetrated by Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) and Hamas against American citizens. Both organizations are designated as Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTO) and are materially supported by Iran. The ruling echoes previous decisions by the same court holding the regimes responsible for the actions of their terror proxies. In 2012, Syria was held liable for $332 million in damages to the estate of Daniel Wultz, a 16-year-old American killed in a Palestinian suicide bombing.

Since the Islamic Republic of Iran’s establishment in 1979, it has become a leading patron of the Palestinian cause. Iran has two goals in arming Palestinian militant organizations. The first is to foment continued violence between the Palestinians and Israel in order to prevent a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which would deprive Iran of a vehicle to export the Islamic Revolution. Secondly, arming the Palestinians enables Tehran to play one faction against another, allowing Iran to maintain leverage over the various Palestinian groups and thereby the Palestinian nationalist movement as a whole, bringing them into line with the regime’s foreign policy objectives.

PIJ is a Palestinian Islamist terrorist group and its primary sponsor is Iran, which has provided the group with millions of dollars in direct funding, as well as training and weapons. PIJ is dedicated to eradicating Israel and establishing an autonomous Islamic Palestinian state in the lands currently comprising Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. Hamas has governed the Gaza Strip since it violently expelled the Palestinian Authority in 2007. Iran has provided Hamas with financing, weapons, and military training in order for the group to carry out its deadly campaigns and administer Gaza.

PIJ and Hamas are the two largest terror groups operating in Gaza today, and both are original members of the U.S. FTO list, established in 1997.
