Renews Call to Maersk to End Its Business in Iran
and Announces Launch of Baltimore and Norfolk Billboard Campaign
New
York, NY -- United Against Nuclear
Iran (UANI) today renewed
its call to Maersk to end
its business in Iran, and
announced the launch of a billboard campaign in Baltimore, Maryland and
Norfolk, Virginia.
The billboard in
Norfolk is located
at 719 Tidewater Drive and reads "Maersk was fined for doing business
in
Iran. Tell Maersk: Shape Up or Ship Out."
Speaking about the
campaign, UANI
President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said:
No American tax
dollars should go to companies who do
business in Iran. Maersk has received over $4 billion in contracts from
the
U.S. government in the past ten years. With more than 90 percent of
these funds
coming from Defense Department contracts, it is troubling that Maersk
would
continue to willfully pursue its Iran business at the expense of U.S.
national
security interests.
In a letter to the CEO of AP
Moller - Maersk Group,
UANI President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace
wrote:
As part of its response to Maersk's continued Iran
business, UANI recently launched a billboard campaign in Baltimore,
Maryland
and Norfolk, Virginia to publicly criticize Maersk's ongoing business
in
Iran... These billboards are in protest of Maersk's refusal to end its
business
in Iran.
UANI demands
that Maersk end its business in Iran.
At the outset as a recipient of U.S. taxpayer dollars, Maersk must
provide a
transparent accounting on the purpose and role of its offices in Iran,
as well
as the nature of the cargo it is shipping to and from Iran.
Please let us
hear from you by December 2, 2010.
