UANI Releases Updated GCC Resource Ahead of Arab Summit

Persian Gulf Countries Play Vital Role in Confronting Iranian Aggression

(New York, N.Y.) – Ahead of tomorrow’s meetings of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Arab League, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is releasing an updated resource on the vital role the Arab world plays in confronting Iranian aggression.

Iran’s aggressive and expansionist behavior was the driving force behind the 1981 creation of the GCC, a regional political, economic, and security alliance. Iran and the Gulf Cooperation Council details both historical and contemporary examples of Iran’s attempts to exacerbate internal sectarian divides, provoke unrest, and topple Arab monarchies.

For example, this month, Iran targeted Saudi Arabia by supplying Yemen’s Houthis with missiles and drones, which they used to attack Saudi cities and oil infrastructure. Last year, the Houthis fired at Saudi tankers in the Red Sea, causing Riyadh to suspend oil shipments.

The report also includes detailed recommendations, including the possibility of designating more GCC countries as major non-NATO allies; bolstering GCC ties with other U.S. regional allies like Egypt and Israel; and creating a formal mechanism for GCC consultation during negotiations for a new Iran nuclear deal. Bolstering the U.S. alliance with the GCC should become an essential pillar of U.S. Middle East policy that reverses the instability that has afflicted the region in recent years.
