Reiterates Call for NYC to Not Award Billion
Dollar Taxi of Tomorrow Contract to Nissan
New York, NY
- United Against Nuclear
Iran (UANI) today renewed
its call for New York City to not award the lucrative Taxi of Tomorrow
contract
to Nissan, which does
business in Iran.
Nissan is one of
three finalists
for the Taxi of Tomorrow contract, and does extensive business in Iran
through
its relationship with Iranian car manufacturer Pars Khodro. The other
two
finalists, Ford and Karsan, do not do business in Iran, and UANI
supports both
of them as deserving candidates for the contract.
Said UANI President, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace:
New York City
must not award the Taxi of Tomorrow
contract to Nissan, which does extensive business in Iran. New
Yorkers do
not want their tax dollars going to a company that financially empowers
the
brutal dictators who rule Iran. Until Nissan takes the responsible
action of
pulling out of Iran, they should not be considered for this major
contract,
where they would so prominently represent New York City.
The Taxi of Tomorrow
campaign is a
competition designed to select New York City's exclusive taxi cab for a
decade.
In January, UANI called on New York City
to refuse to award the
contract to companies that conduct business in Iran.
Since then, one of
the finalists,
Turkey's Karsan Otomotiv
("Karsan"), demonstrated to UANI
that it had withdrawn from Iran
and committed to foregoing any business there until Iran fulfills its
obligations to the international community related to its illegal
nuclear
program.
UANI once again calls on Nissan to join the dozens of other companies around the world which have ended their business in Iran.
