UANI Profile: Iran’s Speaker Of Parliament Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf
(New York, N.Y.) – On May 28, 2020, Iran’s parliament elected Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf as speaker. Ghalibaf’s appointment is significant as he replaces Ali Larijani, who was the longest-serving speaker of parliament in the history of the Islamic Republic. While parliament’s authority remains limited, the speakership is important as the office is a power broker in Tehran and holds seats on the Supreme National Security Council and the Supreme Economic Coordination Council.
A longtime fixture of the regime, Ghalibaf has a revolutionary and technocratic pedigree. From his tenure in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to his years as mayor of Tehran, Ghalibaf has alternated between branding himself as a pragmatic modernizer and hardline authoritarian.
United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is releasing a new profile on Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf. It analyzes his rise and the dynamic he will face as speaker. Ghalibaf’s ascension to the office has sparked rumors that he will use the position as a platform to run for president in 2021.
