UANI Issues Statement Regarding South Korean President Park Geun-Hye's Visit to the U.S.
New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement today regarding South Korean President Park Geun-hye's visit to New York and Washington this week:
South Korea can, and should, be doing much more to pressure and isolate Iran. South Korea continues to engage in oil trade with Iran, and South Korean companies like LG, Posco, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Hyundai Merchant Marine, Hanjin, and Daelim persist in doing lucrative and dangerous business in Iran. This is unacceptable at a time when the international community is working to isolate the Iranian regime in response to its illicit nuclear program, support for terrorism, and human rights abuses.
We call on President Obama and U.S. lawmakers to impress upon President Park the urgent need for an end to South Korean business activity in Iran. Commitments by the South Korea government to isolate the Iranian regime must be reinforced by responsible and meaningful action by South Korean industry. President Obama should also make clear to President Park that South Korea must continue to drastically decrease its imports of Iranian oil by the end of 2013.
As a responsible member of the international community, South Korea must do more to address the threat to international peace and stability posed by the Iranian regime.
