UANI Issues Statement Regarding Iranian Presidential Election

New York, NY - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO, Ambassador Mark D. Wallace, issued the following statement regarding the Iranian Presidential election:

We congratulate the Iranian people for sending a clear message demanding change under difficult and undemocratic circumstances. But will the regime change the course it has charted for nearly 35 years? Will Iran renounce its role as the world's leading state-sponsor of terrorism? Will Iran end its brutal human rights abuses? And will Iran verifiably end its pursuit of an illicit nuclear weapon?

President-elect Rowhani campaigned proudly on his record as Iran's nuclear negotiator during the time that Iran secretly advanced its nuclear weapons capability and deceived the international community to avoid harsh sanctions. He has promised more of the same, but this time the international community is on notice of his past deceit.

For many years Iran's hostile policies have led to its international isolation and economic sanctions. By first disqualifying reformist candidates for President, and then limiting those candidates on the ballot to hand-picked insiders including Rowhani, the regime has shown that it plans more of the same. The world's response should therefore remain the same -- the continued isolation of Iran, and comprehensive sanctions.
