UANI Calls on U.N. Security Council to Hold Iran Accountable for Violations of Resolution 2231
(New York, N.Y.) – The United Nations (U.N.) Security Council plans to debate the implementation of Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorsed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on December 19. United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said today that it is now imperative for the international community to hold Iran accountable for its illegal ballistic missile program and arms transfers.
“Since its adoption in 2015, Iran has repeatedly violated both the letter and the spirit of Resolution 2231. Iran’s recent testing of the Shahab-3 medium-range missile and the attempted launch of the Safir satellite vehicle in August are the most recent examples of Iran engaging in internationally proscribed behavior. Iran has also continued to supply weapons to Hezbollah, Hamas, Shiite militias in Iraq, and the Houthis in Yemen, in violation of multiple Security Council resolutions.
“While it’s encouraging that Germany, France, and the United Kingdom continue to report Iran’s illicit activities, actions rather than words are critical at this moment because time is running short. In less than a year, the U.N. arms embargo on Iran expires and in 2023, the limitations on its ballistic missile program will end as well. The mullahs are openly bragging about the windfall they stand to reap from these dangerous concessions contained in the nuclear deal. The gathering of members of the Security Council offers an opportunity to build a consensus that the status quo on Iran remains unacceptable and unsustainable.”
