UANI Calls on E.U. to Sanction Hezbollah in its Entirety Following U.S. Treasury Action

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) today called on the European Union (E.U.) to designate Hezbollah in its entirety as a terrorist group, following U.S. government action against three Hezbollah political and security officials.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned key Hezbollah political and security figures for leveraging their positions to facilitate Hezbollah’s “malign agenda and do Iran’s bidding.” The three are Members of Parliament Amin Sherri and Muhammad Hasan Ra’d, and Hezbollah security official Wafiq Safa. Ra'd is both a member of Parliament and a member of the group’s Shura Council, Hezbollah’s “highest command.”

“The idea of separate Hezbollah political and military wings is a fiction mocked by Hezbollah’s own leaders and must finally be laid to rest,” said UANI CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace. “Most recently, the U.K. came to this unmistakable conclusion and appropriately designated Hezbollah in its entirety, joining the U.S., Canada, the Netherlands, the Arab League and Israel. It is time the E.U. acted responsibly and did the same.”

Underscoring the lack of distinction between Hezbollah’s political and military wings, Sherri has also appeared publicly with Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps-Qods Force (IRGC-QF) Commander Qasem Soleimani, whom OFAC designated in October 2011.

UANI’s website, Eye on Hezbollah, chronicles the Lebanese Shiite Islamist terrorist group’s evolution from a small radical gang in 1982 to a virtual state within a state. On this portal, UANI maintains profiles on Amin Sherri, Muhammad Hasan Ra’d, and senior Hezbollah management.
