UANI Applauds U.S. Revocation of Iran Nuclear Waivers
(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement regarding the U.S. government’s revocation of nuclear cooperation waivers under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). These waivers enabled the advancement of Iran’s nuclear program by permitting Chinese, European, and Russian companies to work with the regime on discrete projects.
“We applaud the Trump administration for its decision to end the nuclear cooperation waivers under the JCPOA. These waivers were dangerous in that they provided Iran with a pathway to build a nuclear weapon. The head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran admitted last year to secretly acquiring replacement tubes for the Arak reactor all while the regime was negotiating with the West. This was a sign of Tehran’s bad faith.
“The JCPOA remains too broken to succeed, and it is time for our European partners to recognize that inconvenient truth. Iran continues to violate the agreement with impunity. As a next step, we urge the Trump administration to use its status as a JCPOA participant to trigger the snapback sanctions under U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231. Maximum pressure remains the best way to convince the Iranian regime to change its malign behavior.”
