Senior Commander of Iran Proxy Palestinian Islamic Jihad Killed in Airstrike

(New York, N.Y.) – In a predawn strike, Israel killed Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) Gaza commander, Baha Abu al-Ata.

Israel described al-Ata as a “ticking bomb” who was “responsible for most of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad’s activity in the Gaza Strip.” Following the strike, PIJ launched dozens of rockets toward southern and central Israel, forcing schools to close in Tel Aviv and thousands of Israelis into bomb shelters.

United Against Nuclear Iran’s (UANI) report, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, details the history, ideology, structure, and Iran’s support of PIJ’s violent activities. Iran is PIJ’s primary sponsor, providing the group with millions of dollars in direct funding, as well as training and weapons.

UANI's report, From Proxy to Patron: Iran’s Relationship With the Palestinian National Movement, describes how Tehran uses Palestinian nationalist movement to export its Islamic Revolution.
