Russian Foreign Ministry Responds to UANI Board Member Henry Sokolski

New York, NY - The Russian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday, November 24, responded to UANI Board Member Henry Sokolski's assertions that Russia is supporting Iran's nuclear weapons program.

In a recent piece written for the Washington Times, Mr. Sokolski raised questions about Russian ties to and potential support for Iran's nuclear program.  He noted the "two-point detonation" warhead that would increase the range of Iran's nuclear missiles, the heavy water reactor at Arak that is designed to make plutonium that could be used in a weapon, and the development of long-range rockets.  Sokolski suggested that the Russians have aided Iran in the development of this technology and called for a public debate regarding Russian assistance.

Although U.S. officials have not responded directly to Mr. Sokolski's comments, the Russian Foreign Ministry has dismissed his claims as baseless.  In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to Mr. Sokolski: "The emergence of nuclear weapons in Iran would be just as unacceptable to us as to the United States. We have said this several times. So claims that Russia is helping Iran to build nuclear weapons are entirely unfounded."

In response to the Russian Foreign Ministry's comments, UANI President, Ambassador Mark Wallace said: "We call on Russia to act on its assertion that the emergence of nuclear weapons in Iran would be unacceptable by joining the international community to impose crippling sanctions on the Iranian regime.  We also call on Russian companies to cease doing business in Iran and to send a clear message of isolation to the Iranian regime."
