Raisi Selects Hardliner Tied To IRGC, Hezbollah As Foreign Minister

(New York, N.Y.) — Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has consolidated a majority hardline conservative cabinet in selecting Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, an anti-Western diplomat, to serve as his foreign minister. Amir-Abdollahian is closely tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the regime’s terror proxy Hezbollah, both U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs). His nomination to the diplomatic post is expected to be ratified by the Islamic Consultative Assembly. If confirmed, he will direct the regime’s strategy to win sanctions relief.

In its newly published profile, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian: Raisi's Pick for Islamic Republic Foreign Minister, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) explores Amir-Abdollahian’s career, connections to FTOs, and what can be expected of him as foreign minister.

Under his leadership, the Foreign Ministry will be more closely aligned with the priorities of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the IRGC. This includes building stronger ties with the “Resistance Axis,” or the alliance of state and non-state actors led by Tehran – which includes Hamas and Hezbollah – as well as Russia and China.
