Looming Iran Deal Raises Bipartisan Concern On Capitol Hill
(New York, N.Y.) — Last week, two groups of U.S. representatives and senators sent letters to President Biden expressing their apprehension over the likelihood of a nuclear deal with Iran. The bipartisan group of House Members and the group of 49 Republican senators warned that the reported contours of the deal being negotiated would not meet the Biden Administration’s promise for a “longer and stronger” agreement. Press reports indicate that the deal nearing agreement will repeat or worsen the shortcomings of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
In addition, the letters expressed concern about the likelihood of Iran winning relief from non-nuclear sanctions against U.S.-designated Foreign Terrorist Organizations, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and allowing Iranian trade and security to be more closely moored to Russia and China.
Each letter detailed concerns that United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) has similarly voiced about the JCPOA’s parameters. In an open letter organized by UANI last year to the Biden Administration, nearly 50 global leaders on Iran policy urged President Biden to maintain U.S. sanctions and use the economic leverage he was afforded to negotiate an agreement that retired the JCPOA’s glaring deficiencies:
- The deal gave Iran a clear pathway to nuclear weapons by including dates certain for nuclear restrictions to be lifted no later than 2031.
- The deal handicapped the IAEA from conducting “anytime, anywhere” inspections, leaving precious time for Iran to cover up evidence of covert nuclear activities.
- The deal awarded Iran front-loaded, permanent benefits for temporary nuclear restrictions.
- The deal emboldened and enriched an extremist anti-American terror state thereby furthering Iran's expansionist and destabilizing activities including state-sponsorship of terrorism, hostage diplomacy, and gross violations of human rights.
