The IRGC as Foreign Terrorist Organization

(New York, N.Y.) – April 8 marks the first anniversary of the U.S. government’s designation of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a foreign terrorist organization (FTO). Such a step was the first time the United States named part of the government of another country as an FTO.

In the year since this designation, the IRGC has demonstrated why the FTO label is justified. Over the last few months, there is evidence the IRGC Quds Force’s Axis of Resistance killed U.S. and coalition forces in Iraq. The Pentagon has accused former Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani of approving the storming of the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. Evidence exists of the IRGC preparing to launch the attack on Saudi Arabia’s Aramco oil facilities in September 2019 from Ahvaz Air Base in southwestern Iran. This was an operation, which U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo called “an unprecedented attack on the world’s energy supply.” There have also been repeated Iranian attacks on foreign vessels and the IRGC Navy’s seizure of the British tanker Stena Impero in July.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) is releasing a series of profiles on the IRGC’s senior leadership—past and present. The Life and Times of IRGC-Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani traces his rise through the ranks of the regime’s senior leadership. UANI has also analyzed the career of his successor, Esmail Ghaani, and Ghaani’s deputy, Mohammad Hejazi. Finally, UANI maintains a comprehensive report on the IRGC, outlining its structure and methods.
