ICYMI: UANI Featured On Inaugural Episode Of Voice Of America’s “Flashpoint Iran” Podcast

(New York, N.Y.) — On Tuesday, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chief of Staff Claire Jungman joined Voice of America’s “Flashpoint Iran” podcast with Michael Lipin and Steve Miller for its inaugural episode to discuss the Iranian regime’s illicit transfers of oil and the methods it employs to do so. Jungman called on the Biden administration to impose sanctions on both the shipping companies and the individual vessels carrying illicit cargo.

Addressing the series of sanctions the Biden administration announced in June, July, and September of 2022 on entities facilitating Iranian oil smuggling, Jungman said:

“This is a great step. You know this is something we have been calling for, it is a positive first step but there is definitely more that can be done… Our understanding and belief is without the sanctions on the vessels specifically they will just change their ownership and put it behind a new company and the vessels will then go about continuing to trade illicit cargo. It is really the sanctions on the vessels that have the impact.”

Every month, UANI’s Iran Tanker Tracker tracks Iran’s export of crude oil and gas to countries around the world, as well as the regime’s sanction evasion techniques. So far, in 2022, at least 185 ship-to-ship (STS) transfers of Iranian oil have taken place in Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean waters. The facilitators of this trade clearly understand the ongoing absence of sanctions enforcement today: the rewards are high, the risks non-existent. UANI has identified the vessels more notorious for STS in Indonesian, Malaysian and Singaporean waters, none of which have been designated by U.S. authorities.
