ICYMI: Reuters Highlights UANI Evidence Of Iranian Sanctions-Dodging Through Illegal Shipping Activities

(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI)’s campaign to monitor and report illegal Iranian oil transfers in international waters was highlighted by Reuters on Tuesday. Utilizing various methods and sources, UANI has identified and documented concrete evidence of efforts by the Iranian regime to skirt U.S. and E.U. sanctions on Tehran’s oil trade through illicit ship-to-ship (STS) transfers:

…The STS operations were halted before the cargoes were transferred after Maersk Tankers was alerted by U.S. pressure group United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI). UANI, which monitors Iran-related tanker traffic through ship and satellite tracking, said it was aware of multiple illicit oil transfers that affected shipping companies conducting regular trade.

Speaking to Reuters, UANI Chief of Staff Claire Jungman outlined the illicit behavior Iranian shipping companies engage in to avoid sanctions:

…Most often, by the time the STS gets to a large company, such as Maersk Tankers, the vessels have engaged in numerous STS in an attempt to mask the origin of the cargo, Claire Jungman of UANI said.

Every month, UANI publishes a blog outlining potential sanctions violations by Iranian-affiliated ships and shipping companies in addition to monthly estimates of Iran’s exports of crude oil and gas condensates which are tracked on our Iran Tanker Tracking resource. Data from UANI’s January 2021 Iran Tanker Tracking blog was highlighted in Reuters’ recent coverage.

In UANI’s June 2021 Iran Tanker Tracking blog post, UANI identified that Iran illegally used 14 different foreign-flagged tankers for the regime’s oil exports across international waters, an increase of nine tankers from June 2020.
