ICYMI: Iran Is Threatening American Lives On U.S. Soil

(New York, N.Y.) — On Thursday, United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace and UANI Advisory Board Member Governor Jeb Bush co-authored an op-ed published by the Miami Herald highlighting Washington’s inability thus far to deter the Iranian regime from threatening American lives on U.S. soil and the need for the U.S. to take a more aggressive, comprehensive, and proactive approach to countering transnational repression and operations they describe as “tantamount to acts of war."

The op-ed comes in the wake of increasing threats to members of the Iranian protest movement in the U.S., including Iranian American journalist Masih Alinejad, who has been threatened on multiple occasions by the Iranian regime. In 2021, the Justice Department filed charges against an Iranian intelligence officer and members of an Iranian intelligence network that plotted to kidnap Alinejad and rendition her via Venezuela. Two years later, Tehran directed a murder-for-hire plot against Alinejad. Additionally, the FBI alerted Iranian-American author Roya Hakakian that she was in danger from Tehran but could not offer her protection.

While the U.S. has taken some measures to hold the Iranian regime accountable, including sanctioning Iranian operatives involved in these plots, the recurring threats to American lives on American soil require a far stronger response.

Ambassador Wallace and Governor Bush argue that Washington should authorize and fund federal departments through executive orders and legislation to support the needs of all Americans and criminalize transnational repression itself.
