Former U.S. Officials Face Serious And Credible Threats From Iran

(New York, N.Y.) — Former U.S. officials who spearheaded the Trump Administration’s “maximum pressure” campaign against the Islamic Republic of Iran are facing “serious and credible’ threats from Iran.” The Department of State recently reported that $13.1 million has been spent on enhanced security for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former U.S. Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook. Former National Security Advisor Ambassador John Bolton is also under threat of assassination by Iran.

Iran remains interested in developing networks inside the U.S.—an objective that it has pursued for more than a decade. In August 2018, U.S. federal authorities arrested two individuals, Ahmadreza Mohammadi Doostdar and Majid Ghorbani, for acting as Iranian agents, violating U.S. sanctions, and conspiracy. In October 2011, U.S. agents disrupted an assassination plot allegedly directed by the Iranian regime targeting Saudi Arabia’s then-ambassador to Washington, Adel al-Jubeir. The FBI’s investigation into the plot (code named Operation Red Coalition) discovered that Mansoor Arbabsiar, a dual U.S.-Iranian citizen, and Gholam Shakuri, an IRGC-QF commander, were planning to kill al-Jubeir with a bomb at a restaurant.
