Eye on Iran's Protests - February 9, 2023  

Iran’s security forces have killed 528 protesters, including 71 children, in the 147 days since protests began in September. Protests in Iran continue despite the regime’s brutal crackdown, and the Iranian diaspora community continues to organize around the world to put pressure on governments to take action in support of the Iranian protesters.

The following map highlights the cities where protest-related incidents (gatherings, strikes, arrests, and deaths) occurred yesterday. There were over 25 such incidents concentrated in Tehran. 

The brave people of Zahedan demonstrated against Iran’s supreme leader on February 3, 2023, chanting “Death to Khamenei” as the Islamic Republic marks the 44th anniversary of the revolution this week.

Iranians’ Attitudes Toward The 2022 Nationwide Protests | The Group For Analyzing And Measuring Attitudes In Iran 

The survey “Iranians’ Attitudes Toward the 2022 Nationwide Protests” was conducted between December 21–31, 2022. Around 200,000 respondents participated in and completed this survey. Over 158,000 respondents were inside Iran, and over 42,000 respondents were outside the country. In response to the question “Islamic Republic: Yes or No?” 81% of respondents inside the country responded “No” to the Islamic Republic, 15% responded “Yes,” and 4% were not sure.  

Iranian Security Forces Accused Of Shooting Eyes Of Young Female Protesters | Fox News 

With Iran rocked by nearly five months of protests, reports are emerging of the country’s security forces deliberately shooting at the eyes of demonstrators, particularly young women. In a report released Friday, the Norway-based Iran Human Rights group said that Iranian security forces are shooting protesters in the head and face, leading to many being blinded. Initial data compiled by the human rights group indicates that a disproportionate number of protesters being targeted and sustaining such wounds are young women.

Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian will be addressing the annual opening of the United Nations Human Rights Council on February 27, prompting human rights activists to call on diplomats to walk out. “This is a regime that beats, blinds, jails, tortures and kills innocent women for the crime of protesting for their basic human rights and dignity,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of the independent non-governmental human rights group UN Watch.

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shirin Ebadi said the death in custody of a young Iranian Kurdish woman last year has sparked an irreversible "revolutionary process" that would eventually lead to the collapse of the Islamic Republic. Like many critics of Iran's clerical rulers, Ebadi believes the current wave of protests has been the boldest challenge to the establishment's legitimacy yet. "This revolutionary process is like a train that will not stop until it reaches its final destination," said Ebadi.  

Rights Watchdog Calls Iranian Government's Anniversary Celebrations 'Shameful,' Banners Burned | Radio Free Europe 

Protesters in several Iranian cities, including the capital, Tehran, have set fire to government banners commemorating the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution as rights group Amnesty International chided the country's leaders for "decades of mass killings and cover-ups." Amnesty called the anniversary celebrations "shameful" amid decades of mass killings and cover-ups by authorities, including the current brutal treatment of protesters since Amini's death, as well as the 1988 prison massacre that saw thousands of Iranian political prisoners and others killed in mass executions across the country.
