Eye on Iran's Protests - December 15, 2022

Two Iranian protesters have been executed in a barbaric fashion, shortly after they were convicted of dubious crimes in sham trials. Dozens of other innocent Iranians—many of them minors—are facing the same fate, having been sentenced to death on trumped-up charges. Their lives depend on the perpetrators of these reprehensible actions receiving consequences.

19-year-old Mohamad Broghani is in imminent danger of execution.

Iran Ousted From U.N. Women’s Rights Agency In U.S.-backed Vote | New York Times

Iran was removed from the U.N.’s Commission on the Status of Women, a body dedicated to the advancement of women’s rights around the world. The U.S.-backed resolution to remove Iran was cosponsored by 12 allies. Russia, China, and other Iran allies condemned the resolution as interference in Iran’s domestic affairs. Iran Pushes Global List Of Imprisoned Journalists To Record High | Agence France-Presse 

An activist organization reported that the number of journalists imprisoned in Iran has reached a record high of 533 in 2022, as the regime seeks to suppress coverage of the movement and its abuses of human rights. Statement By National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan On U.N. Vote To Remove Iran From The Commission On The Status Of Women | The White House 

“The recent horrifying executions in Tehran only strengthen our resolve to expand this growing consensus and pursue all possible mechanisms of accountability against the Iranian regime and its officials responsible for these atrocities,” National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said in a statement after Iran’s removal from the U.N. Commission on the Status of Women. 

Khamenei’s Nephew Hails Iran’s Anti-Regime Protests | The Jerusalem Post 

The son of Supreme Leader Khamenei’s sister, Dr. Mahmoud Moradkhani, based in France, praised those in Iran who are risking their lives to protest against the regime. This comes a week after Khamenei’s sister expressed her support for the protesters. Her whereabouts have been in question since December 7.

Iranian professional footballer Amir Nasr-Azadani was sentenced to death for “campaigning for women’s rights.”

16-year-old Sonia Sharifi was charged with “waging war against God,” a crime punishable by death. She was arrested and imprisoned for protesting. 

Revolutionaries threw Molotov cocktails at governorate buildings.

“Women, Life, Freedom” was projected onto the Azadi Tower in Tehran, boosting protesters’ morale. 

Blindfolded, 23-year-old Majidreza Rahnavard expressed his dying wishes before being hanged. He said “don’t cry, don’t read the Koran, don’t pray.”

Multiple officers, some of them without government marking, assaulted a woman on the street. 

Iran’s Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that “cyberspace will be completely blocked, even though creating tools to bypass the restrictions is on the enemies’ agenda.”
