Eye on Iran's Protests - August 31, 2023

As the anniversary of Mahsa Amini’s death on September 16, 2022, fast approaches, Iran’s judiciary and law enforcement authorities ramp up violence to intimidate dissidents and deter civil disobedience and street protests. Over 500 dissidents have been killed since the Woman, Life, Freedom movement began, and countless others face brutality within Iran’s abhorrent prison system.

Authorities in Iran are forcing women refusing to cover their hair into psychiatric treatment.

A woman attacked by law enforcement agents for improper hijab passed out in a metro station in Shiraz, Iran.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is rounding up women’s rights activists in the lead up to the anniversary of mass protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in morality police custody.

Regime forces raided the home of Mashallah Karami, the father of 22-year-old Mehdi Karami, who was sentenced to death in a sham trial and executed by hanging in January 2023.

A revolutionary court in the Iranian city of Karaj handed down harsh prison sentences to eight individuals after they were convicted of “warfare” and “corruption on earth” in connection with the alleged death of a paramilitary volunteer during nationwide protests last year.

A young protester, Kemar Tahmasbi, was reportedly killed in an armed clash with regime forces in southern Iran. He is believed to be among other youths who participated in protests back in November. The regime’s revenge continues.

Iranian security forces violently arrested popular singer, Mehdi Yarrahi, over his latest song, "Take Off Your Headscarf.”

The father, mother, sister, and fiancé of Hananeh Kia, a 23-year-old girl murdered by the regime in September 2022, have all been detained.

Javad Rouhi, a detained protester who received three death sentences in connection with Iran's 2022 anti-regime uprising, has died in a hospital after suffering a seizure in prison, the Islamic Republic's judiciary said. His family, however, told his lawyer that Javad died in prison.

Nazila Maroufian, an Iranian journalist, was arrested for the fourth time by thugs of the mullah regime in Iran. They recently broke into her house, beat and took her by force. She had recently been released from prison after covering the Mahsa Amini story.
