(New York, NY) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement today regarding the return of Barry Rosen, a survivor of the Iran hostage crisis and UANI Senior Advisor, to the U.S. following his five-day hunger strike in Vienna meant to draw attention to the Iranian regime’s practice of hostage taking.

“Barry’s courageous #FreeTheHostages campaign drew much needed attention to the suffering of hostages and their families held by Iran. Barry’s selfless effort is a direct reflection of his exceptional character and commitment to human rights.   

During his hunger strike, Rosen had frank and productive conversations with U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley and negotiators representing European allies, including France and Germany. Rosen urged them to insist upon the release of all U.S. and Western hostages held by Tehran as a precondition to any agreements alleviating economic pressure on Iran, and to insist that any agreements be null and void if Iran takes new hostages in the future. Malley, in a meeting with Rosen and a reporter from Reuters, expressed his view that “it is very hard for us to imagine getting back into the nuclear deal while four innocent Americans are being held hostage by Iran.”

The United States is unlikely to strike an agreement with Iran to save the 2015 Iran nuclear deal unless Tehran releases four U.S. citizens Washington says it is holding hostage, the lead U.S. nuclear negotiator told Reuters on Sunday. The official, U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley, repeated the long-held U.S. position that the issue of the four people held in Iran is separate from the nuclear negotiations. He moved a step closer, however, to saying that their release was a precondition for a nuclear agreement. "They're separate and we're pursuing both of them. But I will say it is very hard for us to imagine getting back into the nuclear deal while four innocent Americans are being held hostage by Iran," Malley told Reuters in an interview.

An Iranian court has sentenced a French man to eight years in jail on spying charges, his family and Paris-based lawyer said Tuesday, arguing that Tehran was using him as a "hostage" in talks with the West. Benjamin Briere, 36, is the only Western detainee known to be currently held in Iran who does not also hold an Iranian passport. He was also given an additional eight-month sentence for propaganda against Iran's Islamic system, his lawyer Philippe Valent said in a statement.

Amerika Serikat tidak mungkin mencapai kesepakatan dengan Iran untuk menyelamatkan perjanjian nuklir Iran 2015 kecuali jika Teheran membebaskan empat warga AS yang menurut Washington disandera. Namun, dia mengambil langkah lebih maju dengan mengatakan bahwa pembebasan warga AS itu adalah prasyarat untuk mencapai perjanjia

Barry Rosen werd als jonge diplomaat van de Verenigde Staten tijdens de Iraanse gijzelingscrisis van 1979 tot 1981 samen met tientallen andere medewerkers van de ambassade vastgehouden. Hij is sinds woensdag in hongerstaking. Nizar Zakka, die ongeveer rond hetzelfde moment met zijn actie begon, werd in 2015 gearresteerd wegens vermeende spionage. Hij zat vier jaar achter de tralies. Momenteel worden een tiental mensen uit westerse landen vastgehouden in Iran, veelal wegens vermeende politieke misdrijven of spionage.

Der im Iran inhaftierte österreichisch-iranische Doppelstaatsbürger Kamran Ghaderi ist am Montag in den Hungerstreik getreten. Das gab seine in Wien lebende Frau Harika bekannt. "Er protestiert dagegen, unschuldig sechs Jahre lang im Iran im Gefängnis zu sein", hieß es in ihrer Stellungnahme. Der 58-Jährige verlange, dass "die Freilassung aller EU-Doppelstaatsbürger, die im Iran als Geiseln gehalten werden", zur Bedingung für eine Fortsetzung der Verhandlungen über das Atomabkommen mit dem Iran gemacht wird.

Seit Mittwoch befindet sich der 77-jährige Amerikaner den Angaben zufolge im Hungerstreik. Es dürfe keinen Deal mit dem Iran geben, solang das Regime in Teheran nicht alle Doppelstaatsbürger und Ausländer freilasse, die es unter fadenscheinigen Gründen als Unterpfand für Tauschgeschäfte festhalte, forderte Barry Rosen gegenüber der „Presse“. Rosen war selbst einmal Geisel im Iran, vom 4. November 1979 bis zum 20. Jänner 1981. Der ehemalige Presseattaché zählte zu den 52 Amerikanern, die nach der Besetzung der US-Botschaft in Teheran 444 Tage lang in Gefangenschaft waren.
