The U.S. hasn’t said what the Touska was carrying. Searching through the containers on board will likely take time and need to be done once the 965-foot ship is towed into a port.

But the Touska’s decision to try to breach the U.S. blockade suggested it was carrying something of value to Iran, said Charlie Brown, a former U.S. Navy officer and senior adviser for United Against Nuclear Iran, a U.S.-based advocacy group. “It must have been worth the risk to try to run the blockade, but they chose poorly,” he said.
