I do not foresee any change,” Charlie Brown, a Singapore-based maritime security expert and adviser at advocacy group United Against Nuclear Iran, told Energy Intelligence. The US Treasury imposed fresh sanctions on Iran’s tanker fleet on Monday — the second such additions such Trump took office in January — but so far, these have been limited in scope. “There is a lack of political will. Malaysia seems to rely on the interpretation that they do not have to do something about it,” Brown said. . . . Malaysian authorities and coastal guards also argue they do not have the resources to stop illegal oil transfers. “But are they understanding the risks of them not acting?" Brown asked. . . . “STS will not disappear. They could move further up the South China Sea, [to] more complex areas,” Brown said."
