Shariatmadari, Hossein

Editor in chief (1993–present) of the hardline state-run newspaper Kayhan, which is thought to reflect Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei's views. Appointed as editor by Khamenei.¹ In his post, he engaged in "inciting violence and hatred" against Baha'is, justifying "suppression of political dissidents," and "[f]raming and slandering environmental activists."²

Has called for taking EU nationals hostage.³ Former interrogator for the intelligence ministry, in which role he tortured dissidents to secure false confessions and produced a television show broadcasting such confessions.⁴
