UANI Welcomes President Macron’s Commitment To Tightening Sanctions Against Iranian Regime

(New York, N.Y.) — United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement today applauding French President Emmanuel Macron for recognizing that additional targeted sanctions against the Iranian regime are warranted amid the crackdown on Iranian protesters and committing his government to tougher measures. President Macron did so after a series of meetings with Iranian dissidents and activists in recent days.

“President Macron is showing that he is now clear-eyed about the nature of the Iranian regime and the urgency of standing with the brave protesters continuing to foment what he calls a ‘revolution’. UANI applauds President Macron for his leadership and urges him to follow through with sweeping actions that reflect French values and the hard truth that Tehran is ruled by a terrorist regime.

“France has an opportunity today to lead Europe into a new era that recognizes the impossibility of accommodating the human rights abusers, terrorists, and terror financiers leading the Islamic Republic. Now is the time for bold action. President Macron should prioritize efforts to ensure the EU aligns its targeted human rights sanctions with the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, moves swiftly to designate those individuals and entities responsible for ongoing abuses, and update its terrorism lists to include the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and both IRGC’s Quds Force Commander Esmail Ghaani and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as its leaders.

“The Iranian people should not have to risk their lives fighting the regime with one hand tied behind their backs. To truly stand with the people, France, and its allies should hold the regime accountable and commit themselves to unrelenting economic pressure and diplomatic isolation against this regime.”
