UANI Statement on New U.S. Sanctions Against Khamenei & IRGC Leadership

(New York, N.Y.) - United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chief Executive Officer Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement today after the Trump Administration and the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) released a new round of sanctions against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC):

“Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has for three decades wielded the IRGC and its Quds Force to execute Iran’s reign of terror across the Middle East and beyond. Today’s sanctions against Khamenei and eight senior commanders in the IRGC, denying access to financial resources, are long overdue and will help stifle the Iranian regime’s ability to fund terrorism via their global proxies. They send a clear message to Tehran that their actions will not go unanswered.

"The Trump Administration and the international community at-large must be unified in conducting a Maximum Pressure economic campaign. Last week, the Financial Action Task Force imposed new oversight requirements on Iranian banks and subsidiaries. However, Iran was allowed to willfully ignore the organization’s action plan for three years and countermeasures need to be put in place to ensure the integrity of the international banking system.

“Tehran’s actions have shown that it will continue to defy the 12 basic measures set by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last year, continuing its destructive behavior. Iran must remain closed for business until it changes its behavior. To bring it into compliance, we encourage the Treasury Department to rain down further sanctions against the regime’s petrochemical industry, which remains unaffected and generates $13 billion annually for the regime – money used by Iran to fund the IRGC and terror activities.”
