UANI Statement On Deadly Iran-Backed Attack On U.S. Soldiers

(New York, N.Y.)United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement today after three U.S. soldiers were killed and more than two dozen were injured in Jordan by Iran-backed militias:

“Like all Americans, we mourn the deaths of three soldiers killed today in an Iranian regime-backed terrorist attack, pray for the swift recovery of all those wounded, and are left asking if this egregious attack would have happened had the U.S. not forfeited its deterrence over Iran in recent years.

“Dozens of attacks against U.S. military personnel have gone unanswered. Kidnapping and assassination plots against Americans on U.S. soil were met with strongly-worded press statements and piecemeal sanctions. Hostage taking was rewarded with multi-billion dollar ransom payments. And now, an Iranian-backed attack that violated Jordanian sovereignty has left three soldiers dead. This isn’t merely state sponsorship of terrorism – it is an act of war.

“President Biden must respond with a decisive U.S. military response against targets inside Iran, as UANI has repeatedly recommended since the October 7 massacre in Israel. The U.S. should attack and destroy Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) military and intelligence targets in Iran, as well as missile and drone bases where the Iranian regime’s proxies are trained. It is past time the U.S. destroy the malign terror apparatus that has produced a seemingly endless cycle of destruction and death upon the U.S. and its allies.

“The Biden administration has claimed the U.S. has ‘delivered a message’ to Iran’s regime in response to some previous attacks. Clearly, the message has been ignored and is not perceived as credible or serious within Ayatollah Khamenei’s regime. It is past time for the U.S. to demonstrate true leadership by carrying out direct strikes on IRGC assets inside Iran. There is no substitute for a decisive, overwhelming response that hits the Iranian regime’s premiere terror branch at home, but the U.S. should not stop there. This is also the moment in which the U.S. must rally its allies to isolate Iran’s regime economically and diplomatically as it never has done before. The failure to impose direct consequence on the IRGC will only embolden their aggression and lead to more – not less – escalation in the region.

“After over 159 attacks on U.S. forces in recent months, the death of U.S. soldiers inside the borders of a key U.S. ally in the region today should spur new, unprecedented military action against Khamenei’s regime. Absent such action, we can expect to see continued losses of our U.S. military personnel.”
