UANI Applauds U.S. Leadership In Holding Iranian Human Rights Violators Accountable, Urges Europeans to Act Now

(New York, NY) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released the following statement today applauding the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s latest designations of Iranian officials for human rights violations under Executive Orders 13553 and 13846. The designations follow previous action targeting the Iranian regime’s so-called “morality police” following the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in their custody. More than 150 Iranians, including women and children, have been killed in the anti-regime protests spreading throughout Iran since Amini’s death.

“UANI applauds the Biden administration for recognizing that acting against a regime terrorizing and murdering its own citizens must not be delayed. Iranian people are risking their lives every day in demanding their freedom, and the U.S. and international community at large must do everything possible to support them and their aspirations.

“Next, the Biden administration should sanction Iran’s supreme leader and president personally for human rights abuses under Executive Order 13553. Those men give the orders to the officials sanctioned today.

“The Biden administration’s speed contrasts starkly with the EU’s waiting to impose new sanctions until EU foreign ministers meet on October 17. To continue to claim the mantle of prioritizing human rights, the EU—and the U.K.—must act immediately and robustly to support the Iranian people and hold the regime accountable.

“Further, the EU and U.K. must match the U.S. designations against individuals and entities that violate the human rights of Iranians. Synchronizing our positions on both sides of the Atlantic would be pivotal towards supporting an ascendant protest movement while punishing a murderous regime.
