UANI Applauds U.S. Designation Of Martyrs Foundation Network As Global Terrorists

Actions Curtail Hezbollah’s Financial Support Network, Weakens Iranian Influence

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace today released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration’s action designating Martyrs Foundation companies and officials – entities associated with Hezbollah’s support network – as global terrorists:

“There is only one Hezbollah. Hezbollah’s leaders don’t distinguish between their military wing and their political one, and neither should anyone else. Today’s designations are a positive step towards curbing the Party of God’s growth. UANI has previously urged the U.S. and its allies to target the entities providing Hezbollah financial support, including Atlas Holdings, to counter Iran’s “Axis of Resistance.” We applaud President Trump and Secretaries Pompeo and Mnuchin for their continued commitment to reducing the threat of Iran’s malign behavior through the maximum pressure campaign, and we call upon them to encourage our allies to follow suit. More can and must be done for true maximum pressure to be applied on Tehran.”

UANI specifically called for financial action to be taken on Atlas Holdings and its subsidiaries when the organization released its 17-step plan for continued maximum pressure on Iran in 2019. Some of UANI’s other recommendations have already been acted on by the United States government, including increasing sanctions on Iran’s petrochemicals sector – its second-largest export industry after oil. Additional recommendations include making greater use of authorities for addressing human rights abuses and corruption in Iran and rescinding the JCPOA’s civil nuclear cooperation waivers. UANI also maintains a comprehensive website, Eye on Hezbollah, which tracks the organization’s structure and history.

For 35 years, Iran has been designated by the U.S. as a state sponsor of terror. In addition to carrying out direct attacks, Tehran has committed terrorism by proxy through HezbollahHamas, the Houthis, and militias in IraqSyria, and Bahrain. Iran has a long history of terrorist attacks against the U.S. and other Western countries, carrying out bombings, abductions and hijackings.
