UANI Applauds U.S. and European Snapback Sanctions Deadline
(New York, NY) – United Against Nuclear Iran Chairman Governor Jeb Bush and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace issued the following statement today after Axios reported on a deadline issued to Iran’s regime for it to avoid the invocation of the U.N. snapback sanctions mechanism:
“We applaud President Trump, Secretary Rubio, and the E3 for agreeing to invoke the U.N. snapback sanctions mechanism on Iran by the end of August if no deal with Iran’s regime is reached by then. Tehran has learned that for the Trump administration, a deadline means a deadline. After failing to agree to a deal within 60 days of diplomacy, the United States and Israel undertook targeted military action against the regime in June. Consequently, Tehran should take this new deadline seriously.
“Invoking snapback would restore critical provisions of previous U.N. Security Council resolutions endorsing suspension of all enrichment and reprocessing in Iran, which would bolster the U.S. position of zero enrichment. It would also reinstate the international arms control architecture—specifically the U.N. arms embargo and restrictions on the Iranian regime’s missile program—which are critical to have on the books to counter Tehran’s effort at rebuilding after Operations Rising Lion and Midnight Hammer.
“The Trump administration and E3 should accept nothing less than the full dismantlement of the Iranian nuclear program in exchange for forgoing snapback. We also encourage President Trump to agree on a series of understandings with Israel on the steps by the Iranian regime that would trigger additional U.S. and Israeli military action against its nuclear program—especially any attempts to recover its stockpile of highly enriched uranium under the rubble of the destroyed nuclear facilities.”
