UANI Applauds Finalization Of Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement As Coronavirus Severely Impacts Iran

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) today commended the Trump administration and the Swiss government for the finalization of the Swiss Humanitarian Trade Arrangement (SHTA). UANI Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace said in a statement:

“We applaud the U.S. and Swiss governments for the operationalization of the SHTA in the context of the coronavirus outbreak. Maximum pressure can only be successful if it allows for the delivery of goods, supplies and services that meet the important humanitarian needs of the Iranian people. The SHTA is an important mechanism for achieving this goal at a time when the coronavirus is spreading throughout Iran.

“Iran’s regime has a long history of illicit diversion of such humanitarian products, with the chief of staff to President Rouhani disclosing this past summer that around $1.12 billion in hard currency allocated for importing essential goods ‘had disappeared.’ If implemented correctly, the SHTA has the potential to dramatically assist the Iranian people. We encourage all parties involved to take advantage of this mechanism, for the good of all those affected by the coronavirus.”

UANI maintains a report entitled Iran Sanctions: Fact or Fiction, which debunks the myths surrounding U.S. sanctions on Iran. Additionally, UANI’s resource, Corruption and Mismanagement Index, details the regime’s long history of governance problems.
