Iran’s Unimpeded Violations Of Human Rights Demands Increased Scrutiny

(New York, N.Y.) – Today, as the international community marks U.N. Human Rights Day, the Islamic Republic of Iran is undertaking a brutal and systematic campaign of human rights abuses against its own citizens and civilians around the world. From abhorrent execution rates and violent repression of dissent to rampant discrimination against women and minorities, political kidnappings and the inhumane treatment of political prisoners, the Iranian regime holds one of the world’s worst records of human rights offenses.

Last month, a Canadian resolution condemning the regime for its brutality at home was passed by the U.N. General Assembly’s Third Committee. It calls for continued “examination of the situation of human rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran” in the next session, which begins in September 2021. Tehran rejected the resolution, and without heightened scrutiny and consequences from U.N. member states, the regime can be expected to continue its malign behavior.

United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI)’s resource, Iran’s War on Protesters: Death, Detention, and Darkness, provides an overview of the regime’s tactics to crush dissent and violent targeting of civilian protestors. UANI’s resource, Cruel & Inhuman: Executions and Other Punishment in Iran, outlines the regime’s judicial injustices. UANI also analyzes Iran’s targeting of minority citizens and the working class in its Iran’s War On Women, Iran’s War On LGBT Citizens and Iran’s War On Workers And The Middle Class resources. UANI also maintains profiles of the Chief Justice of Iran Ebrahim Raisi, and some notorious members of the regime’s judiciary, including Mohammad Moghiseh and Abolqasem Salavati.
