UANI Applauds Fresh Sanctions on Iran’s Metals Industry and Senior Regime Officials

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following statement in response to the Trump administration’s imposition of additional economic sanctions against Iran’s metal exports and eight senior Iranian officials including Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC).

UANI applauds the Trump administration's determination to increase economic pressure on the Iranian regime, further isolate its leadership in the international community, and punish the foreign businesses that fuel Iran’s ability to fund its nuclear program and terror activities. Tehran is paying the price for its reckless aggression.

“By any measure, Tehran’s behavior is outside the norms of acceptability. So, too, is the behavior of businesses that engage the regime. Today’s actions send the clear message that no business can escape scrutiny or consequences for doing business with Iran.

“The international community should be disabused of any notion that the campaign of maximum pressure has reached its peak. It has not. There are many more steps that the U.S. can take to hold the regime fully accountable for its actions. Each will become more important as Iran steps up its uranium enrichment activities and key provisions of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) move closer to their sunset dates.”

In October 2019, UANI released a resource, Next Steps in the Maximum Pressure Campaign, detailing 16 areas where additional action can be taken to strengthen the maximum pressure campaign. This resource recommended sanctioning Ali Shamkhani. UANI also maintains a comprehensive analysis of Iran’s ballistic missile program as well as a study of the life and times of former Quds Force Commander Qassem Soleimani.
