According to the organisation United Against Nuclear Iran, Khatib had a long background in Iran’s security institutions. Rising from IRGC intelligence during the Iran-Iraq War to senior roles in MOIS and the Judiciary’s intelligence arm, he began seminary training in Qom in the mid 1970’s.
