After years of demonstrating his strength with confrontational rhetoric toward the US and Israel, [Iranian Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei supported pro-Iranian militias like Lebanon's Hezbollah, while simultaneously keeping a direct conflict away from Iran, this strategy now appears to have come to an abrupt end. “He has prided himself on deterring adversaries from Iran’s borders since he took over as supreme leader in 1989,” recalled Jason Brodsky, political director of the US-based organization United Against Nuclear Iran. “So Khamenei has seriously miscalculated.”
