UANI Impact: Fresh Sanctions Against UANI’s Recommended Targets Announced By U.S., U.K.

(New York, N.Y.) — After United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) recommended the U.S. and U.K. levy sanctions last month against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Quds Force Deputy Commander Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Fallahzadeh, this week Washington and London sanctioned him in a joint announcement. Additionally, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned two Panama-flagged vessels that UANI first identified in 2023 as likely participating in Tehran’s efforts to evade U.S. sanctions prohibiting the sale of Iranian oil: the ARTURA and KOHANA.

Fallahzadeh, a ‘below the radar’ IRGC leader profiled in UANI’s inaugural edition of UANI Top 10 Iran Sanctions Targets, is guilty of coordinating terrorist operations against U.S. and Coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, as well as arming and supporting Iran-backed terrorist militias, including Hezbollah in Lebanon, and being involved in proliferation of advanced missiles and drones. As the U.S. Treasury Department noted, he also contributed to immense destruction and civilian casualties in the Battle of Aleppo.

Last year, UANI also recommended that the U.S. impose sanctions on the Panama-flagged vessels, and all vessels, suspected of participating in Iran’s efforts to smuggle oil to fund its state-sponsorship of terrorism, transnational repression, and domestic human rights abuses. Among the 389 vessels that UANI has compiled dossiers of evidence against are the ARTURA (IMO: 9150365), listed by UANI in March 2023, and KOHANA (IMO: 9254082), listed by UANI in May 2023.

The Treasury Department cited ARTURA’s carrying of sanctioned Iranian oil this year for the network of Iran-based, IRGC-QF-backed Houthi financial facilitator Sa’id al-Jamal, who is also sanctioned, as a proximate cause for its action. KOHANA, which lost its American Club indemnity insurance policy in January at UANI’s urging, is presently laden with $100 million worth of Iranian oil bound for China, according to the Treasury Department.

UANI depends on the generosity of its supporters to continue identifying regime leaders that should be held accountable and bad actors helping to keep the Iranian regime economically afloat.
