Eye on Iran's Protests - November 9, 2023

On October 28, 2023, Armita Geravand, a 16-year-old girl who fell into a coma after being attacked by the ‘Morality Police’ in a metro station for not properly wearing a hijab, was pronounced dead, adding to the list of over 500 victims that have paid the ultimate price for freedom from tyranny. Her death reminded the world of the brutal murder of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, also at the hands of the ‘Morality Police,’ which sparked the Woman, Life, Freedom movement. Geravand and Amini were fighting for their freedom through peaceful acts of civil disobedience—which remain prevalent in Iran despite the severe risk to safety.

Members of the Iranian diaspora community gathered at pro-Israel rallies around the world to demonstrate their solidarity with the Jewish state after Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attacks.

The Sydney Peace Foundation presented its 2023 prize to Iranian dissident activist and actress Nazanin Boniadi for "lending a powerful voice to support Iranian women and girls and their Woman, Life, Freedom movement, and for using a high-profile platform to promote freedom and justice in Iran."

Ali Bahreini, the Iranian diplomat presiding over the U.N. Human Rights Council's Social Forum, cut off human rights activist Shadi Amin’s microphone upon the request of the Islamic Republic's delegation as she was criticizing the decision to make him chairman considering Iran's human rights record.

An Iranian woman spoke out against the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling it “the supporter, trainer, and biggest funder of terrorism,” at a rally demanding the release of hostages from Hamas’ captivity. 

Iranian security agents violently arrested at least nine Bahai followers amid a crackdown against the religious minority group.

The Iranian authorities are toying with the life of arbitrarily detained human rights defender and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi by repeatedly and deliberately denying her adequate healthcare, including specialized tests on her lungs and heart.
