In 2018 the U.S. state of Iowa listed Tatneft as an Iran restricted company rendering Tatneft ineligible for investment and/or state contracting.

 Russia's oil giant TATNEFT has submitted the result of its studies on Iran's Shadegan oilfield to the National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC). The two majors signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for developing the field in March. Besides TATNEFT, NISOC has signed similar documents with other companies for developing the field. The Shadegan oil field is an oil field located in Khuzestan Province, in the south west of Ahvaz City. It was discovered in 1968 and the production was started after installing production facilities in 1988. The field has 23 km in length 6 km in width and includes two Asmari and Bangestan reservoirs and currently with 20 active wells, oil production is about 69,000 barrels per day (11,000 m3/d). Russian Public Joint Stock Company TATNEFT signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with National Iranian South Oilfields Company (NISOC) for carrying oilfield development studies in southwestern Iran, Shana reported. The MOU for preliminary studies on Shadegan oilfield in Khuzestan province was signed by the two sides’ representatives in Tehran on Sunday. According to the agreement, TATNEFT will carry out studies on the field and the company is to hand the results and its proposal to NISOC in six months. (March 2017)

"Following two earlier contracts with two Russian oil companies, Iran has signed a memorandum of cooperation in oil and gas industry with a third Russian firm. Given the newly-signed agreement, the number of Russian companies active in Iran’s oil and gas industries has reached a total of three. Previous deals were sealed with Zarubezhnefta and Lukoil companies while the third one Tatneft, a Russian vertically integrated oil and gas company with headquarters in the city of Almetyevsk in the Republic of Tatarstan... on Saturday morning, NIOC Managing Director Ali Kardor and CEO of Tatneft Nail Ulfatovich Maganov signed the deal to conduct developmental studies in Dehloran oil field. The agreement marks the first contract signed between NIOC and the Russian firm and it mainly deals with increasing recovery factor of the Iranian field."
