ICYMI: Senator Joseph I. Lieberman Calls for Unified Response to Iranian Regime’s Violence Against Protestors

(New York, N.Y.) – UANI Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman appeared on Fox Business Network’s Mornings With Maria Bartiromo on November 22 to discuss the ongoing protests against the authoritarian regime in Iran. In response to protestors’ peaceful calls for change, the regime responded with violence and an Internet blackout. Senator Lieberman spoke of learning that protesters have been killed by government officials and called on  European nations to join the U.S.-led maximum pressure campaign.

Excerpts from the interview are below.

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman

FOX BUSINESS NETWORK’S MARIA BARTIROMO: “Iran wants to wipe Israel off the map, we’ve heard that many times, they were protesting Iran official there easing up on the stifling internet access. As Secretary of State Pompeo is asking the Iranians to send the U.S. videos “documenting the regime’s crackdown on protesters”, so Mike Pompeo, basically saying, we are watching you, we want to see these videos, what do you think where that is going?”

SENATOR JOE LIEBERMAN: “I think Secretary Pompeo and the Trump administration have been really superb on Iran, as the breaking out of the bad nuclear agreement by the administration, the imposing of tough economic sanctions on Iran is exactly why there is so much unrest in Iran. There is also  unrest because people feel suppressed. They don't have economic opportunities; they don't have freedom. I believe from sources I have that a lot of people who are protesting in the streets just asking for lower gas prices, were actually killed by the government in Iran, over the last week. So, I think we've got to keep economic pressure on. I hope that the Europeans will join America in the maximum pressure economic campaign and eventually the Mullahs who run Iran are going to have to decide to come back and sign a better nuclear agreement, or they are going to face an uprising from the people that will push them out of power.”
