Iran’s Disregard For Human Rights Highlighted In State Department Report

(New York, N.Y.) – United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) Chairman Senator Joseph I. Lieberman and CEO Ambassador Mark D. Wallace released the following joint statement today addressing the release of the U.S. Department of State’s Country Report on Human Rights Practices, which reaffirms Iran’s appalling and systematic disregard for human rights, the cruelty of its judicial system, and the inhumanity of its punishments.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s disregard for internationally recognized human rights is well-documented, and the U.S. Department of State’s report reconfirms that the regime remains one of the world’s worst abusers of human rights.

“The regime is guilty of extra-judicial executions, torture, and Stalinesque forced “confessions” in kangaroo courts. It also provides support to extremists killing innocent civilians in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. The regime abuses women, LGBTI persons, religious and ethnic minorities, protesters, journalists, laborers, and lawyers in Iran. And it continues to kidnap and hold foreign nationals hostage including Americans Siamak and Baquer Namazi, Karan Vafadari, Afarin Neyssari, Morad Tahbaz, and Emad Shargi.

“UANI commends the Biden Administration and Congress for their shared interest in continuing to hold Iran accountable for its gross human rights violations, and applauds the application of sanctions against two Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) interrogators earlier this month for “the torture and/or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment of political prisoners and persons detained during protests in 2019 and 2020 in Iran,” in which thousands were killed.

“UANI urges the Biden Administration to continue to prioritize human rights by issuing further such designations, encourage our allies to follow suit, and declare that in any future diplomatic engagement with Tehran the U.S. will address the regime’s continued human rights abuses of its own citizens.
