UANI's Lieberman and Wallace Support President's Strategy to Improve Nuclear Deal and Comprehensively Combat Iranian Threat

New York, NY - Senior leaders of United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) commented today on the president's speech regarding U.S. policy on Iran.

"We support the president's decision to decertify the Iran nuclear deal," said UANI Chairman and former U.S. Senator Joseph I. Lieberman. "There are indications Iran isn't fully complying with the letter and spirit of the agreement. Tehran's refusal to allow international inspectors access to military sites makes it impossible to verify that the regime is not engaging in nuclear-weapons-related activities. Iran also reportedly tried to procure illicit nuclear and missile technology outside JCPOA-approved channels 32 times in 2016 alone. And Tehran continues to test ballistic missiles and conduct illicit arms transfers, in defiance of U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231," added Lieberman.

"The deal should be improved to eliminate its shortcomings and ensure Iranian compliance," said UANI CEO and former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mark D. Wallace. "Decertifying the JCPOA provides the leverage needed to encourage our European allies to back a more serious agreement that offers stronger and more permanent provisions, such as eliminating the existing sunset clauses, tackling the lack of 'anytime, anywhere' inspections, and strengthening U.N. Security Council Resolution 2231," added Wallace.

"UANI also applauds the administration for its focus on the problematic non-nuclear aspects of Iran's behavior - including increased sanctions on the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). For too long, Iran's support for terrorism, regional meddling, and human rights abuses have been overlooked by the international community in an attempt to make the Iran nuclear deal work. Today's strategy is a warning to the Iranian regime that the status quo remains unacceptable," said Wallace.

UANI unveiled a new resource earlier this year outlining the flaws in the nuclear accord and proposing new ways to strengthen the agreement.

Led by a group of former leading diplomats and lawmakers, UANI is in the midst of raising world attention about the corporate risks of doing business with Iran, warning hundreds of international companies that are eyeing Tehran as a new investment opportunity.
