" ERIC SHAWN: yeah, it's unbelievable. look at manhattan, you have the tourists, the shoppers, right around the corner you have the icon of america, the rockefeller certainty christmas tree, all dressed up there and that building right there -- a piggy bank for iran. that at least according to the treasury department. they say that 36-story office building is actually owned by the government of iran and they accuse a company that runs -- partially owns that building, of being a front, saying basically that the money from that building goes to tehran to help support and develop iran's nuclear and missile -- ballistic missile program so the u.s. treasury department moving to try and seize part of that building. really an unbelievable story....JOE KILDEA: they're in dire straits economically and they're looking for any sorts of income they can this could make a big difference." The New York Times also reported on the above story, saying that "federal authorities moved on Wednesday to seize assets from a company suspected of being a front for an Iranian bank that has ties to terrorism, assets that include the company's 40 percent stake in a sleek Midtown Manhattan office tower." "The Treasury Department announced that it had designated the Assa Corporation, which does business in New York, a shell company that launders money and sends it to Melli. The Assa Corporation's parent, the Assa Company, based in the Channel Islands, owns a 40 percent stake in 650 Fifth Avenue, a 36-story granite-and-glass tower at 52nd Street. The building has many prominent tenants, including Citibank, Equity 1 and Pali Capital." Read More

Reuters reported that "Russia is currently fulfilling a contract to deliver S-300 air defence systems to Iran, RIA news agency quoted confidential sources as saying on Wednesday." "... RIA said on Wednesday that Russia and Iran were holding talks on sales of medium-range air defence systems. 'Moscow has earlier met its obligations on supplying Tor-M1 systems to Iran and is currently implementing a contract to deliver S-300 systems,' RIA reported." Read More
VOA reported comments by Sec. Gates about Iran and its nuclear activities. "Mr. Gates also warned of Iran's missile and nuclear programs. 'It is clear that Iran has this year tested long-range missiles that can hit any country in the Middle East ... [and] has continued its pursuit of a nuclear program that is almost assuredly geared toward developing nuclear weapons.'" Read More
In Newsweek, CFR's Greg Bruno asked whether Iran is "ready to listen" to a willing-to-talk U.S. "Prospects for a breakthrough via engagement may be ancillary to more fundamental realities inside Iran. ... Hossein Askari, an expert on Iran and business professor at George Washington University, argues that the Obama administration should capitalize on Tehran's economic hardships and 'develop even more effective sanctions' to tighten the screws (National Interest). Then the new White House should wait-six to twelve months-before negotiating, Askari says. 'Under duress, Iran is much less fanatical than rhetoric would have it seem.' Pakistani press reported that "Codepink Women for Peace has announced plans to launch a new company that will invest in an Iranian wind energy company, allowing Americans to show support for peace and sustainability in Iran." "The company, called Winds of Change, will sell shares for $5 each. AP quoted Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak warning that Iran could attack the U.S. if it acquired a nuclear weapon. "He spoke at a conference of the Institute for National Security Studies at Tel Aviv University. He said, 'If it built even a primitive nuclear weapon like the type that destroyed Hiroshima, Iran would not hesitate to load it on a ship, arm it with a detonator operated by GPS and sail it into a vital port on the east coast of North America.'" "Porter ... says early optimism that President-elect Barack Obama would open a new dialogue with Iran has dissipated. Porter says many Iranian political figures now see Obama's selection of Hillary Clinton as secretary of state as an indication he will continue Washington's insistence that Iran first signal a willingness to suspend its nuclear enrichment program before engaging more intensely."
